Default whistle blowing

i feel really stupid but what does whistle blowing actually mean, i stupidly thought it to mean something to do with blowing an actual whistle but my friend told me it is about talking behind someones back...im really confused as have never heard this expression before can anyone help!?

whistleblower

comes from when police on the beat carried whistles to communicate to each other.. you know the good old days when you saw them out and about.. but then Im old enough to remember them!!

suppose you could call it another term for grass. snitch or informer!

Its more then talking behind someones back!

Noah's right it's an avenue for people to turn to if they feel there is misconduct, cause for complaint or if serious risk is occuring, challenged or unchallenged and raising concern is awkward/endangering or possibly a fear of recrimination exists ..

its going to the local athorities and telling them if there is something wrong in the work place. for example if your boss was treating some children badly then you could tell the local athority without telling the boss or after telling the boss most settings have a whistle blowing policy and procedure in place
