Case study: Being a role model
Ben is working in a pre-school. Helping with the children who stay for lunch, he stands up to eat his sandwich, talks loudly and reaches across the table to grab the last piece of cake. One boy gets up and walks around with a sandwich. The noise level is also higher than usual and the supervisor notices that some children leave the table without asking. Afterwards she has a quiet word with Ben. The next day, Ben sits down at the table with the children, puts his sandwich on a plate and asks if anyone would like water before serving himself. He makes sure that he says ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. He notices that many of the children are sitting and eating nicely. He notices that many of the children are sitting and eating nicely.
1.How did Ben’s behaviour on the first day affect the children?
2.Why did the children’s behaviour change on the second day?
3.Why is it important that adults’ acts act in ways that will help children to learn positive behaviour?
