Why is it important to be aware of your limitations?
Simply because as an individual you won't or don't know everything about a child - perhaps you would speak to a parent who would know their child better, a key worker of that child or even the Senco in your setting or share information with a professional outside the setting.
Respect the experience and responsibilites of other professionals -
They will have different knowledge - but also beneficial knowledge. You may have inter-agency meetings with other professionals - Area Senco, Occupational therapist etc.
You don't 'knock' their suggestions/knowledge, but respect and embrace their input as you are all working and aiming for the same outcome for a child - to give then the best possible start in life.
When is comes to asserting your knowledge - it simply means that you should respect your own knowledge of that child and you expertise. You may not have the 'professional' qualifcations of a paediatrician, but your knowledge and expertise as you imput into a meeting or an IEP will be valued.
You will ensure that a good relationship is maintained with other professionals by the way you interact and speak to other professionals - by listening to each other, sharing information and respecting and valuing each other's knowledge and input and genuinely work together as part of a team.
