It's probably a lot easier to make changes to policies than you think - it's just when it appears as 'homework' it seems impossible.
Policies should alway be read, reviewed and updated, added to or changed to continue to reflect how the setting operates or to make sure you are following legislation.
So, the first thing you could do is go through your policies - read them - are they all in order?
has anything changed? has your setting changed any procedures? i.e. you may have changed your procedure about mobile phones in the settings - do they have to be displayed where others can see them? or have you decided to have a no phone policy whilst at work - but allowing staff to hand out work telephone numbers for emergencies?
Has your setting got current policies such as a critical incident policy? If not, how and what would you do in an emergency i.e. a tree comes down on your building/ electrical fire/flooding in building whilst you are there - what do you do, where do you go to, who do you inform? If you have a policy such as this - is everything just as it's been written? Has the place where you will take the children for safety remained the same or changed?
Have you changed anything within your setting - gone over to a healthy eating policy - have changes been made, but not updated in the policy?
Have you written up and implemented any new policies - pets - are they permitted to be brought to the setting or not?
Have a look through your policies, you may notice that you and the staff are following a procedure but it's not been updated in a policy. perhaps after reading them you feel that there is a place for a policy to ensure safety etc. Your assessor has mentioned child protection - check that those are up-to-date - is the policy current? does it match up to your procedures - how do you ensure that only known and authorised people visit the setting?
What do you do if you need a workman in? What if it is an emergency such as the toilet is overflowing onto the corridor and you need it seeing to - how do you ensure that children are safe?
Check your policies out and I'm sure that you will find something. I look at ours on a regular basis and change them if new legislation comes out, but still look at them on an annual basis when I go through them with a fine toothcomb to keep everything up-to-date - information, telephone numbers in order, departments/names still used and whether the policy is still relevant etc.
