Hi, the article on wikipedia has some good leads for the role of physical exercise - Physical exercise ie it provides a way to aid circulation, exercise muscles, increase/decrease the body's chemical levels. The promotion of mental health & physical health can involve how practitioners are able to pass on knowledge & understanding of how each can take control over their own health - now and for the future, methods of exercise, what exercise does, how diet & foods are involved, where professional opinion is in regards to weight and how discrimination can occur as a result of learning about weight control.

I like the abstract on this page of ncbi.nlm.nih.gov that details how too much as well as too little exercise can be as equally damaging to development - The role of exercise for children and also the definition of physical activity published on Sustrans.org.uk - Physical exercise and health.

Definition
Physical activity is defined as "any force exerted by skeletal muscle that results in energy expenditure above resting level" and includes "the full range of human movement, from competitive sport and exercise to active hobbies, walking and cycling or activities of daily living"(1).
Setting benchmarks for practice might be knoweldge of how breathing & a heart beat that sustains life is perhaps a naturally occuring exercise practitioners can work with/on ..

Other search ideas for you could be around:
Enabling children to express their mood, emotion, feelings and interest through physical exercise.
What happens when you exercise - what is physical exertion from howstuffworks
Why children need to exercise.
How physical exercise equates = den building / marathon running / hopscotch / blackline drawing ..
Measuring physical exercise: mild, moderate, extreme ..
Weight management, bone growth, associated health risks & their reduction for children: diabetes, high blood pressure, circulation.
Recognising adult benefits of physical exercise & its use for training, self develoment and how to utilise this for the children.

Hope this helps a little xx
