Even before children and their families enter the playroom/classroom you can show that you welcome everyone by displaying a welcome poster in many different languages.
Your setting should have equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion policies. When children and their famlies come to look round, they should be offered the policies to read, so they know what policies and procedures you have.
Your setting should also ensure they employ the right staff and make it clear to potential staff that your setting welcomes all, and they are expected to embrace this.
To make people feel valued, you should respect and include all, ask a child's parent if there is anything in their religion or cultural calendar that your setting could celebrate and share, or perhaps they can contribute in any way by way of coming in with to talk and show something to the children.
You should ensure that your setting is pro-active in providing resources - dolls of different ethnicity, jigsaw puzzles, books, looking at different cultures and religions. You can do topics such as Africa, read large story books such as Handa's surprise, eat exotic fruit such as pineapples and mangoes, look at the different African countries, how they live, that they eat and what they wear. Talk to and ask the children questions on the topic, so they are interested in other parts of the world and who lives there.
Play CDs of songs in different languages, provide dressing up clothes from around the world. By welcoming all children and their families into your setting and providing positive role models (by way of staff) showing how you welcome, value and respect everyone, celebrating lots of different festivals and celebrations throughout the year will help children to accept everyone for who they are.
I hope this helps you start on this subject.
