play and identity
Erikson (1950) psychosocial theory-(the way the mind works with what happens to us socially) strongly believed the way we respond to children had a very long lasting effect on their image, negative effects on self identity can be carried on into adult hood and effect the ability to form relationships and learn well, Erikson thought there were 8 developmental phases during a persons life and at each phase we deal with certain crisis’s (ref p 195) he focuses on the emergence of a sense of identity and views social forces as very important in development and considers psychosocial conflicts never to be fully resolved.
play and learningand development
Fried Frobel studied play he identified the impact play has on young children’s development and learning, he observed children at play and concluded that play was of central importance in his philosophy of the education and care of young children, he developed a curriculum around the childs free play which he believed was the best possible form of learning.
Play brings all the childs learning and experience together to make a whole, play is based on what a child can do and helps children use and build on the skills they learn, children play because they like it it gives them pleasure and makes them happy.
Nash 1997 and montessori suggest play is important for brain development, montessori windows of oportunity.
hope this helps.
