ok - a step towards own independence, earning own money so a sense of pride, feeling more grown up, respecting authority, taking care of appearance, taking on responsibilities eg time keeping, being part of a team, wanting to progress, learning new skills, making new friends, making a valuable contribution, putting skills learned in college to good use, wanting to make a good impression etc etc

Excellent reply. It can help if you look at the two environments - college and a work place are see what they would offer the people within them - reassurance, dependancy, routines, boundaries, expectations, knowledge of who to talk to in certain events or needs, knowledge of the building and grounds, supports and promotes independancy.

The transition between the two may involve being unfamiliar with the inside & outside. Who's who in a new workplace, what to do, where to go and what might be expected of someone, what happens if an employee wishes to surpass expectations, doesn't meet them or fears failure.

New/stressful situations can cause withdrawal or aggression - both affecting decision making processes, how someone works for themselves and with others.

If you scroll half way down this page on Acas - school & college leavers it may help. It is written to guide employers but demonstates how leavers can be supported.

Quote:
School and college leavers
For school or college leavers, who may be nervous but excited at their first job, it is particularly important for the employer to encourage a positive attitude to work, and to allay any fears the new recruit may have. They need to be sure of their position in the company, and of the opportunities they will have to train and develop their skills.
Hth xx
