Discuss when carrying out any risk assessment it is essential to balance the benefits of an activity (or of using a piece of equipment) with the likelihood of coming to harm and the severity of that harm.
Suggest that staff teams need to discuss how they will help children to manage equipment or tools which could cause harm and when new equipment is considered or obtained, staff need to discuss how they might help children use it safely and plan staff time for this teaching to take place.
In our setting we don't do a risk assessment we have a risk benefit!
