children learn through play and should be able to learn in the way/style/schema they prefer for instance if you decided that it was about time a 3 year knew all her numbers - would reciting by rote up to 100 really help them?
They may well be able to reel them all off, but they don't understand the concept of numbers, so to some they may think the child is good at maths - when in fact, they aren't.
A three year old may like counting sorting and matching by way of counting conkers into a basket, transporting them across the playroom and count them out into a different container. They may only be counting up to 5 or 6, but they are learning at the appropriate age and stage and may count the conkers in different ways, 3 into one container, three into another, learning how or which way they count they still only have 6 etc
They can consolidate this knowledge when singing (on their own) or at singing time using their fingers when singing songs such as '1,2,3,4,5, once I caught a fish alive..... '
