Default speech, language and communication development.

Hi, I have recently started a level 3 qualification and am confused about how to answer a question as part of my first assignment. The question asks about activities to encourage and support speech, language and communication development (I have lots of ideas for this part) but then asks to explain how each activity supports and promotes speech, language and communication development. I am sure the answer isn't as complicated as I keep thinking but any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated. I haven't done any studying for 26 years so it all feels a bit strange at the moment but loving the challenge at the same time

Hi a very warm to the site.

This criteria will help show you what children's speech language and communication development looks like and how it can be supported and promoted through the different type of activities that you have ideas for :) ie. the benefits of those activities eg. babies who at around 7 months old enjoy playing peek a boo, this activity engages and motivates them to communicate - eye contact, smiling and be keen to try the game out for themselves, taking the lead in hiding the object that will then reappear, enabling them to watch someone else's response and reaction.

Have you been recommended a handbook for your course?

This is a free sample chapter from pearsonschoolsandfecolleges.co.uk

and then pages 294 (most notably page 304+) of this EYE book looks at children's developing speech, language and communication, use the look inside feature and search for the words 'speech language communication'

Ideally you'd also have access to a child development book such as this one by Carolyn Meggitt or this title by Jennie Lindon & Kathy Brodie maybe ask your setting if they have a copy?

The framework for your home nation will also help. EYFS & Development Matters if you work in England. The other home nations Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland each have their own frameworks.

Hope this helps, best wishes with your study xx
