How are children taught to keep themselves safe?
I have SERIOUS issues and never believe my work is 'good enough' even with feedback from the tutor so... Does this seem good enough? Currently working through 7 tasks to do for Health & Safety in the workplace. The question is; 'explain how the children in your setting are taught about keeping themselves safe. Give some examples'
My answer is;
How are the children in your setting taught about keeping themselves safe?
It is important for children to learn how to keep themselves safe for a young age and they need to learn why been safe is so important to them.
In my setting, the children are taught in a number of ways on how to keep themselves safe. This can be anything from not running around the school to not speaking to strangers through the school fence/gate to telling an adult about any bullying that may occur or the child has witnessed.
For example, one of the biggest safety risks I've noticed in my setting is the children swinging on their chairs, which has resulted in one or two falling off. Myself, and other staff, are constantly having to tell them to put their chair on four legs otherwise there is a risk to not only falling off the chair, but seriously injuring themselves by either banging their head on the floor or banging their face on the table.
Another way the children are taught about been safe is to not run in the school/corridors. This could result in the child slipping and falling, bumping into a door/wall or even bumping into another child or an adult.
The children are also taught how to keep safe during a fire alarm, and they often have practices. This includes leaving their stuff where it is and not collecting any personal items, walking calmly and sensibly down the stairs and out of the door to the fire meeting point. This is a very important part of the Health and Safety policy as it keeps everyone safe; the staff, the visitors, the parent/s carers, the children and also the fire brigade if there is a real fire and they need to attend.
Overall, the children are always practicing how to keep themselves safe without even realising. It's important to keep the children safe, as we are the main carers for them through the day, not following the Health and Safety policy would result in serious consequences such as an investigation.
