Children need to take risks as it’s an important part of their development without risks a child will never understand the dangers and may end up hurting themselves or worse, later In life they may become withdrawn and timid, to avoid risks and at the same time letting children explore the environment then every activity that is planned the hazards should be thought about, the likelihood of the hazards occurring and the control measures to take, health and safety considerations are put in place to avoid the hazards happening this can be easily done with a risk assessment, taking precautions when doing a activity can let the child or young person explore, have fun and learn at the same time they are prepared for the activity with all the precautions put in place, for example if a group of young children aged 16-19 were going skiing then the health and safety precautions must be decided such as a helmet or protective head gear they should be also dressed appropriately for the weather, making sure they wear layers of clothes such as hat, gloves, scarf and plenty of warm clothes. There should always be an experienced skier within the group to give tips and state the health and safety rules and to show the group how to ski, if problems arise then they are there to help and give advice.
the law does state that not all risks should be eliminated but that a ‘reasonable precaution’ is taken, this is important when balancing the need for children to be able to take appropriate risks through physically challenging play.
