Every setting has a duty to protect children and make them feel safe. If childcare practitioners have any concerns about the safety of any child then they have a legal duty to follow their child protection procedures to protect that child from further harm.

Every setting should have a child protection policy. The policy should include how staff can protect children during care routines.

Only staff who have been vetted should have access to children during intimate care routines such as changing nappies, taking children to the toilet or changing children’s clothes. This is a important procedure to follow as it does not only protect the child from abuse but it also protects practitioners from allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

Depending on the children’s age/ability they should be encouraged to be as independent as possible when involved in personal hygiene/care routines. For example children should be encouraged to wipe their own bottoms, get themselves changed etc...
