have the child come in for as many "playtimes" needed to make them feel comfortable.
Make sure ALL information is given to the parents/carers about the setting.
Ask what activities the child enjoys doing and try to include those on your planning.
Have the child's name ready for self registration if you do that.
If old enough try to assign a "buddy" to take care of them.
Make sure the child knows where the toilets are if applicable.
Introduce yourself by name to the child and introduce the other children to them at circle time.
Do you have a home information sheet. Where the parent/carer writes a little bit about the child. Other family members, games they like to play, any pets etc so that you can engage them in conversation.
Make sure the parent knows who everyone who deals with their children are.
Have a picture routine clock so that the child knows what is coming next.
If english is an additional language have the necessary documents translated for them.
Have pictures around the room. photo labels for the toys and areas.
We have some special boards where the parent can record a brief message telling the child they will be back after lunch, tea, garden time etc.
The child can then listen to this if they are distressed. it has a space for a photo of the person speaking.
