Default Ideas

i am doing ym NVQ level 2 in CCLD and am stuck for inspiration as to how to design ways to teach 2-3 yr olds how to protect themselves from the sun and why it is important. It would be much easier if it were for older children but am struggling with planning for 2-3.
could anyone possibly help?

Hi and welcome.

With 2 - 3 yrs think about the activities, play, rhymes and songs, day to day routines you provide to help them understand early aspects of protection.

Dingle dangle scarecrow, has a flippy floppy hat - always good for sun protection. The sun has got his/her hat on - hip hip hip hooray

T shirts and tops - just by commenting that they have an item of clothing on that will protect them from the sun will make them aware.

Cream to stop the sun burning - what communication slips or notes do you have for home that the children can be involved with designing / painting / cutting and for your own information see what your setting's policy for using/storing/buying suncream is.

Water for drinking - dehydration/overheating/getting too hot - you could put a big yellow sun picture next to your drinking water area/cooler system and chat with children letting them know how they can/should/are always welcome to get a drink if they feel hot or thirsty.

Sun canopys, parasols, sun shades for keeping babies safe from the sun - use doll prams, teddys & buggy accessories for play and plan covered outside areas - a gazebo or huge golfing umbella maybe for highlighting how we need to protect from the rays/heat/glare of the sun.

Pointing out the sun - its name and talking about it - big, round, yellow, warm, hot helps the children learn what it is and what it is about.

Times of the day - find out the hottest part of your day and if you stay indoors during these times let the children know why.

Some three year olds maybe able to recognise/identify the numerals 1 0 0 (100% UV protection) label on a pair of glasses and be able to ask if that makes them safer for wearing in the sun.

The other theme and topic forums Weather and Summer have play ideas that you might be able to use.

Hth, please enjoy the site
xx
