Hi, healthier changes involve exercise, knowledge of foods, drinking water, regular eye checks, regular dental care, knowledge of infections - illness, headlice, washing, parents may discuss issues of smoking, alcohol, drugs, pregnancy, relationships, abuse that your setting is well placed to respond to - knowing how to give appropriate information about who can help, how and where.
To implement changes famillies need support, information, flexibility, the setting's willingness to understand and access ...
You could maybe look at how your setting helps support famillies so that everyone participates at the same level - attending trips that involve physical activity, events, occasions where cost, time and additional resources - food/equipment/clothing are involved.
Where locally can health & medical advice/guidance be found. Do you have links with these organisations that enable your setting to support families implementing healthier changes to their lifestyles - getting the advice and information they've requested, or that's been shown to be needed.
Are events, outdoor and indoor activities, play dates, meet ups organised & arranged that help focus and promote health, health awareness and the choices available eg: cooking sessions, nutrition, different diets, medical needs, understanding children's challenging behaviour, children's development, parenting practices, impact parenting practices have on children, do health visitors visit, opticians, dentists ..
ECM's Be healthy
Showing the difference between healthy & less healthy foods can be evidenced by your settings food/meal/snack options. The resources provided for play - in the home corner/dress up/ junk modelling. What you cook and prepare with the children & family sessions. How you provide information about food groups and nutrition - what's good and not so good. What's displayed on walls and surfaces .. and differences for exercise could be how you approach walking and driving, running, climbing, stepping, swimming - for famillies and the children.
Do you support initiatives and campaigns to help awareness of healthy lifestyle choices - Walk to school, Barnardo's big toddle,
Giant walking bus -
guide to organising a walking bus, sports days, parents outdoor play or larger project involvement - digging, moving.
