Hiya,

Unit 308 - Promote children’s well-being and resilience

k3d313 - Why it is important for children to challenge and test their abilities and the relationship between this and self-esteem

Self esteem is about how you see yourself and how you feel others see you - damaging this with criticism, ridicule, doubt, disbelief, negative intervention lowers confidence, ability, willingness and the motivation to try again.

The relationship between challenge and self esteem is the potential sense of achievement, accomplishment and the risk of failing.

Could you include a reflective account to help with this? Maybe use a climbing frame and look at how some Children can travel with confidence up/down/over steps and bars, how some need and some may look for support/guidance and how the activity can be extended to challenge those ready by eg: increasing the movements around the climbing frame, giving focus and planning: role play - Ladybird steps up and down, this Spider moves from side to side. Caterpillar wriggles with all legs on and Snail moves slowly his trail never gone. PD - Two foot per rung moving to one - holding on with care, during this .. PSRN - counting steps or word rhymes as above, one step two step three step four .. five steps big, are we back on the floor? and then evaluate to see what possible damage there could be to self esteem by, eg: asking a less confident Child to climb quickly to the top unaided, and what the same Child may need in order to accomplish this but without the possible fear of failure, made to look or feel less competant than others, or have the sense of inability to attain /achieve an expectation given by another.

Hope this helps

xx
