Lightbulb Video games as a form of play

Hi
I’m a playworker, currently doing a level 3 qualification. I’m sure a lot of you have seen children using (or trying to use) video game platforms e.g. Dsi, 3DS, PS vista or even a console at your setting-maybe your even a gamer yourself.

I was wandering; does anyone here see video game as a form of play? I understand video games are not traditional forms of play but seeing as they have only been around 40 years or so should they start to be integrated better in our profession?

Thanks :)

Hi
My personal opinion I would say yes video games computers etc are a form of play. I am a play worker in a OSC setting and the children are allowed to use them a certain times to play. I have grown up with computers and video games, I enjoy them and I now find they help to relax and unwind me after a day at work. Although nothing beats getting out and playing.

Hi

We have a wii in our play setting, as we thought that it was fun and exercise at the same time.

I think game consoles are ok to use .We have play stations in our OSC but we limit their usage. Most days the children do not even ask for them to go they'd rather be outside. They are used more in the school holidays though.
