Conker bowls! Horse chestnut activities
Playing a game of conker bowls was, is fun! Random and imprecise
the oddly shaped nuts demonstrate nicely how aim and force rely on a
projectile's shape and outer suface to achieve a targetted objective.
Play outside or inside and combine your conker activities with jingle
bells, tennis and ping pong balls and enjoy a range of rolling activities
that use the game rules associated with croquet and bowls.
Extend activities by involving sand and water. Order and sort by size,
count and number, experiment to see which floats and which might sink.
|
Where needed mark each conker with a coloured sticker, craft brad
or permanent marker.
Actively involve maths with resources for measuring - string, rulers
or sticks to compare distances and identify metric units.
To
play bowls:
Gently throw or roll out the jingle bell away from the players.
Establish a boundary line for players to stand on or by.
Taking turns, aim and roll one conker towards the jack.
When everyone has thrown their set of three, check which
is closest to the jack/bell using a rope or other measure if necessary.
The naturally random shape of conkers will eliminate much
of the precision that can makes a game competitive.
Play for fun and have fun ..
