SPIDER IMAGE: Common garden, cross spider - orbweaver and Book review

This handsome chap, more likely to be chapess is located just outside our front door.

Whilst a little cautious now with entering & departing it's been decided that we'd rather know where it is, than ask where is it ..

Aaaarrgghh, Spider! by Lydia Monks is a fantastic spider book for preschool, reception, Yr 1 and Yr 2 with considerations to any curriculum requirements.

Planning to use this book with the recommended age range of 3 - 7 years ..
  • Differentiate the language used in discussions after and during the story is read.
  • Vary the time children are expected to sit, focus and participate in discussions according to their age and stage of development.
  • Include interactive resources that tailor activities to individual learning styles - VAK model
  • Expand the focus of spiders to other areas of freeplay for younger children: sand play, rhymes, songs, crafts
  • Expand to written and illustrative areas of learning for older children: Poems, natural world research, markmaking
  • Use lesson or focus activity plans to guide information given and to meet any required learning outcomes.
Aspects that this book helps practitioners to explore:

Webs - weaving - reflection - dew - times of the day, dawn - sticky types of food, compare the diversity of diets with carnivore, omnivore and herbivore, meat eating, vegetarian and vegan lifestyle choices.

About the book ..

Spider is looking for a family to belong to.
The one she chooses is a little unsure, however with clever web weaving she receives much admiration and finally finds the home she's been wanting so much. Once settled, she then decides to introduce her wonderful new family to all her friends :D

A nice book that also addresses how to safely/humanely remove and relocate spiders back outside ..

BLURB:
All spider wants is to belong to a family. The trouble is, she scares everyone too much!
Poor spider. How will she ever get people to like her?

For greater sensory involvement the book has textured, glittery webs on selected pages.

and for a more graphic look at spiders Usbornes beginner book Spiders
is excellent.

Activity ideas:
Depending on the context that this book is to be used, the age of the children listening and the time available to enjoy, the following activity ideas can support learning in a variety of ways ..
  • Weave webs with string or cord - around card, nails, chairs, tree branches
  • Add silver thread or netting to dough play
  • Sing Incy wincy spider, build role play props
  • From the store, play with spider guarded treasures spider web lair
  • Link ICT to spiders and see how the WorldWideWeb relates - follow the internet thread of connection .... Lydia Monks.com
  • Use mirrors to alter the orientation of how children view themselves - what if they were a spider on the ceiling.
  • Explore children's likes & dislikes, hobbies & interests - dancing, swimming, pets
  • Discuss having a home, family, members of the family, laughing together, being cross together, feeling better with a cuddle, talking about conflict. Understand the issues surrounding homelessness and runaways.
  • Project approach - build a web, or props to role play incy wincy spider.

5 hairy spiders number rhyme printables

Incy Wincy spider playdough activities

Aaaarrgghh! spider lesson plan and book printables:

Odd one out - Get spider home maze - Find the spider

Adapt the complexity of these printables to meet your children's needs/age
eg.
Odd ones out - provide resources to design, develop and build own 'odd ones out. Make large enough to be a floor puzzle
Maze - provide materials to build a maze mobile, tangle and weave the threads to see which spider model is attached to the centre.
Spider search - Have photocopy images of one spider that can be distributed to each child. Provide a range of spiders - plastic, clay, fabric, foil in a container that can be emptied onto the floor for sorting ..

Please add on with your spider encounters and any activity ideas you've enjoyed ..

Spiders

:wide-eyed We have been doing spiders all week and the children have loved it ....we have a huge web and they have made their own hand spiders to hang on it ! spider web pics and all sorts have been done this week - but my nerves are shot to pieces as i have had to be brave and show no fear .....even down to sitting there telling them how spiders can not hurt you !!!
Todays spider hunt had to be the worst bit - me trying to stiffle screams as little children run around showing me the spiders they have found !!!!

I have loved every bit of it though !

lol :D, the web sounds great.

the spider above has gone missing, it had a smaller spider neighbour which makes me wonder if there's now a sac somewhere waiting for the spring. Not really embracing the thought of a gazillion teeny tiny legs hanging around the front door.

Hugs for you getting through the week xx
