SCMP 1 assessment and planning with children and young people

Can anyone give advice on how to answer the following questions please
1.1 explain the value of a child centred model of assessment and planning
1.2 explain how to identify the nneeds of children and young people
1.3 explain the importance of working with others to assess the needs of children and young people to inform planning
1.4 analyse current evidence about effective methods of ensuring participation and engagement of children and young people of all ages and levels of understanding in assessment and planning
Any input would be greatly appreciated as feel the wording of the questions is quite baffling:

Hi,
I've just started this one as well. I have only done a little bit on a couple of the questions so far as i'm not sure I'm on the right track either.
Here's what I've put so far ;-

1.1 Explain the value of a child centred model of assessment and planning
Child centred assessment and planning is a good way to make sure that the setting is giving the children attending the best possible chance to develop at their own rate.
1.2 Explain how to identify the needs of children and young people
Observations are a good way to identify any needs a child may have, by carry out observations on the child you will be able to pinpoint any areas of development the child may need a little extra help with.
1.3 Explain the importance of working with others to assess the needs of children and young people to inform planning
It is important to work with others to assess the needs of children. That way if all agencies are working together with the child’s needs in mind this will only have a positive effect on the child’s learning.
For example a child that needs help in speech and language development would benefit from having a SaLT working with their parents/carers and staff at the setting.

this is all I have done so far and not sure if I'm am totally on the wrong track. I have been working on different parts of the course all weekend and should take a break but wanted to get this done, but now I re-read it, it doesn't seem at all right !! :banghead:

I think i will call it a night and shut the laptop down !! lol

I hope someone can help you more than me

Thanks for your reply. I too seem to be on the same track as you with what answers I have come up with. 1.3 as a foster carer i have discussed about working with multi agencies and professionals and therapists who are able to provide extra support and assist in planning and referrals to support learning opportunities. Discussed sharing of information, keeping parents in the loop and getting consent etc. All services working together in the best interests of the child, every child matters 5 outcomes etc. Hope this added bit of info helps you. If you had school age children could also discuss working alongside teachers or whoever is relevant to your setting. Good luck

Hi, welcome to the site.

There's useful reading on pages 82+ of this CYPW handbook. Open the 'look inside' feature then search for 'development plan' then scroll down until you can click the link to page 80 and then also make a search for 'professional purposes' and click the link to page 164

Others include

children and young people
carers
foster carers
residential workers
social workers
psychologists
doctors
support workers
police
youth justice
speech and language therapists
other agencies

1.3 it is importance to work with others to assess the needs of children and young people so that planning places the child's individual needs at the centre.

Every specialist professional has knowledge and experience from their own area of expertise and access to those skills and resources improve the opportunities for a child to reach their full potential, be healthy, stay safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well-being (Every Child Matters 2003)
