Salt dough or a Mod-roc termite hill!
Build
a termite hill with a salt dough, bake, paint with
mud then role
play using aardvark finger puppets, paper tissue ball termites
and enjoy a story!
As an alternative to the salt dough, layer your container with mod roc bandages and create a hill or cave, once
dry paint with mud or paint!

This is a 4 part activity
1. make the salt dough and model
your termite hill
2. make a mud wash or use brown poster paint
3. make the aardvark finger puppet
4. make termites from rolled black paper
Salt dough ingredients
4 cups plain flour
1 1/2 cup salt
1 1/2 cup of water
Making the
termite hill

weigh, mix, knead
and apply the dough to a foil or food-film covered ovenproof bowl.
before baking cut a hole in the top of the dome
and a doorway at the lower edge. Make the door large enough for a child to
get their hand inside.
bake the finished termite hill for approx. 8 - 12 hours - overnight
is ideal -130c, 250f, gas mark ½.

Making
mud paint
|
taking care not to scoop any creature crawlies, place
a few spoonfuls of top soil into a little water
strain the watery soup and apply to the baked termite
hill. Add red and green poster paint to thicken the mud wash.
once complete and if wanted varnish the painted
termite hill

Print the aardvark finger
puppet
|
print the aardvark picture and cut it out
put sticky tape on the underside to strengthen the cut lines
cut across the two slot lines and fold downwards so that a gap is formed
for a finger
colour in the aardvark
Make the termites by rolling pieces of black paper
into balls drop the termites down trhrough the top of the hill and use the
door for catching them.
Play using a piece of sticky tac rolled and stuck to the tip of the player's
finger.
With a dice determine how many termites need to be taken out
of the hill using a sticky tac'd fingertip to catch them. |
