Recognising the benefits of supporting children as they acquire and master new sounds, words and means of communication highlights the damage that can be caused if any gap/delay in what's expected is missed or ignored.
Can you use observations from your child study to show how you monitor the development of SLC? or the learning journey/development tracker? and the activity planning that you take part in, showing how you support the child's SLC? Think about the professionals your setting works with and their titles - health visitor, speech therapists? and consider the impact of not having access to their expertise.

Short term effects of transitions on children's development include:
• Outbursts of anger - aggression
• Crying and tearfulness
• Clinginess/need for affection
• Withdrawal
• Unreasonable behaviour
• Tantrums in younger children
• Regression in behaviour
• Difficulty sleeping
• Illness
• Extroverted behaviours - unusually cheerful, outgoing, boisterous and attention seeking

Long term effects:
• Self harming
• Withdrawal
• Avoiding social contact
• Lack of concentration
• Not learning/developing
• Low self confidence and self esteem
• Strained relationships
Understanding these effects highlights the immense importance of positive relationships during transitions. So that support, help, advice, a listening ear and reassurance can be provided until the child or young person feels confident, able to cope, comfortable and independent in their new surroundings/situation.
