Physical activities - ideas for moving forward children's learning, supporting and extending individual needs

Hi just ondering if anyone could give me some ideas on this please.

I have to plan a small group activity whhich will take place in a p.e lesson. I need to plan it so it helps children move forward in their learning and support and extends learnign and individual needs.

Can anyone recomend some bit that I can look into doing that will help with the above?

Hi, if you don't mind me asking what age are the children and what did you all do in the last PE session?

hI THEY ARE 4-5YRS WHEN WE DO A PE LESSON WE JUST DO GAMES LIKE DUCK DUCK GOOSE FARMERS INT HE DEN ETC. We don't use equipment or anything so I don't think the obstacle course will be viable.

Thats why I am stuck as originally thoguth obstacle course but told no this was not possible

How about "we're going on a bear hunt"

They could squelch through the mud, wade through the river etc...

the children in our setting love listening to that story and then singing and doing the actions after :reading:

If there's an electrical socket available take a cd player in for dance? there are some nice discs available. Children's party time

A king sized bed sheet makes an excellent canopy for play. Where unfamiliar with what to do, invite children to hold the outer edges and flap up & down for others to run in & out, under and over. Include a few ball-pool balls to the centre of the sheet to toss up and roll around.

Bean game, balloons & bats for children looking for less structured activities?

Hi Sarah,
have a look in the EYFS book for ideas and it will also tell what areas it will cover to promote learning etc x

Movements: star jumps, hops, jumps, spot running, touch toes
Link the above to a 'preschool mascot/toy' says game - simon says
Cheese and tomato sandwiches: all children choose if they want to be cheese or a tomato. All walk randomly around the room until a leader calls stop. All children call out what they choose to be and identify an opposite to pair up with becoming a sandwich. Together the sandwich now chooses whether they are cheese or tomato and then begin walking around holding hands/batons until the lead again calls stop .. the sandwiches call out what they choose to be - tomato/cheese and pair up with an opposite.. game continues until everyone has joined or children choose the same ingredient where the immediate game ends, everyone separates and it all starts over ..

The group sizes can be named ..
Dough balls
Sandwiches
Bagels
Bagette
Loaf
morgenbrød

and the ingredients can change to reflect a theme or learning focus.. fruits, vegetables, spreads ..

Games with resources

Hot potato or prickly thistle - play with balloons or other resource
Statues
Catch the sock, guess what's inside - have 4+ socks to pass around
String balancing - lay string on the floor, play jungle vine tracking: monkey card = stop and make ooo ooo sounds & monkey actions, tiger card roooar, snake card ..
Hopscotch
Ball and hoop activities - roll, kick, throw, catch, score
Mats for rolling forward rolypoly, body barrel roll sideways and backwards?
Exercise balls
Tunnel race - have a pick up & drop off buckets with the tunnel in the middle add balls/bean bags/other resource to collect & return.
Ribbon sticks
Beanbag balance - head, on back of hands, on feet
Rabbit rabbit who has your carrot: request a child to be a rabbit, sit on a chair and cover eyes. Request another child to take the carrot - car cutout/real veg and all to sit on floor. When ready, rabbit removes hands from eyes and everyone calls out 'rabbit, rabbit who has your carrot?' rabbit selects each child in turn who stands, gives a body wiggle and sits again until the carrot owner is revealed .. they then become the next rabbit ..
Cup and paper ball catch
Racquets & bats
Pass the hat - circle game with a central chair for the hat wearer to sit. Everyone chants, 'xx has the hat, it's tall and round with a big black rim xx has the hat, take it off and pass it on who will be the next' .. child chooses another and if possible says their name, selected child takes hat, sits in the circle middle, puts the hat on, everyone chants ..
Musical name chairs - attach children's names to individual chairs and when the music stops must find their name to claim the chair. No child out. Before each new round switch the names to refresh theie positioning.

List of traditional games

You extend individual children's learning by knowing what they are already covering, the resources and activities they currently have access to and then exploring different concepts with them .. the sheet as mentioned above can be used in a follow my leader game or with sticks to hold it up a dragon dance structured games are nicely complimented with an unstructured game resource
