Relevant Points
The Equality Act replaces all previous equalities legislation, bans unlawful discrimination and helps achieve workplace equal opportunities in and outside the workplace. All early years setting, whether in the statutory, voluntary, independent or private sectors, including childminders, must comply with the Act.
The Equality Act 2010 makes sure that people wth particular characteristics are protected from discrimination. These are the protected characteristics
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage and civil partnerships
- pregnancy or maternity
- race
- religion or belief
- sex
- sexual orientation (gay, lesbian, bisexual)
How it affects practice
The Equality Act sets out different ways in which it is unlawful to treat someone, such as direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, victimisation, and failing to make a reasonable adjustment for a disabled person.
