yep doing the fd first means a one year top up and good way of doing esp as lots of authorities are funding this at the moment BUT and i am not trying to out you off i really am not BUT if you haven't done A levels then please please do an academic course first. like intro to academic writing. A levels are the forecourse to a degree the unis don't make any allowances or give any support to students who have earned their place via the vocational route. the difference between an nvq3 and an FD is gigantic not just in content but much more crucially on style. vocational writing ie reflective writing is completely unacceptable and from your first assignment you will be marked down for it. there are quite of lot of these academic writing courses and well well worth doing as a lead up to your degree. good luck!
