Formal writing!!!

Two weeks ago we had our OFSTED inspection and got GOOD in all five areas which we are very pleased about HOWEVER one of our recommendations was for us to be doing more formal writing with the children!!!!! The inspector said that she would have expected the children to be able to write more than their names. This goes against everything that we do to encourage mark making at pre-school we do loads of mark making in the role play area, we have a writing table with highlighters, bingo pens, pencils, biros, post its, cards, envelopes etc etc we also do lots of activities to encourage the right kind of fine and gross motor movements needed to develop the right muscles. The children are shown how to write their names correctly(if they wish) we have good examples of writing displayed around the setting. My reception class teacher was horrified by this recommendation as I am sure will be our early years advisor.
What do you think any opinions and ideas???:soapbox:

I think this is appaling ... and moreover confusing for everyone :muted: it is so typical that when an overall report is as good as this ... inspectors still strive to pick up on the craziest element to push you too :weepy:

I should take it with a large pinch of salt .. consult your reception teacher and EYDW .. write up the action plan but continue with good old fashioned common sense ~ and anyway, those children showing signs of going on to extend their writing skills will be apparent to you !!

Most importantly .. Well done on such a great outcome :D
