foundation degree requirements
 

does anyone now if you need english and maths to do the foundation degree the open university have said its not one of the requirements but the locial childcare & early years service (council) have said you do to get the full degree ?????????

It depends where you do your degree as to whether they want maths and english at the start of the course. However, you will need both to GCSE level by the time you finish the course, especially if you want to do the post graduate teaching year, you will also need science and ICT. I topped up my maths, luckily already had the English and ICT, before starting the foundation degree, otherwise it would have been too much work. Just got the science to do. The course is very demanding and if you have family and work you will struggle to do it all at the same time. Hope this helps you.

P.S I am doing mine at southampton university and the acceptance criteria stated English and Maths before starting.

Thanks for your reply but I think I might have to do some investgateting to find out for sure because the open university say I don’t need it but I don’t want to do all the work then to be told I need math & English .

By the way how are you finding it?????????

I have read some that have done the open university course have found it a struggle and others that said it fitted in with them. I like attending, only Tuesdays 1.15pm until 7.30pm. there is a lot of research, book list reading and assignments to write but you get lots of tutorials, guidance and help, plus, there is always someone there to talk to. You get feedback from tutors and make a great bunch of friends whom you get to do tasks together with. I personally prefer this way, that's not to say that the open university will not work as well for you?
At first i found it all overwhelming,i've just finished my first year and have to say, so glad that i've got summer hols off. Each assignment is 1500 words, i've had x4 each term there is also a large portfolio of 6000 words to have done by xmas. It is a lot, especially if you are working and have children, which is what i have to look after, as well as a puppy (I must be mad!!!!). But the benefits and sense of achievement you get is worth every sleepless night!! Go for it...

I'm new on here, I've just signed up to start the FDEY through the open university, starting in Oct.

Like you I dont think i have grade C math's and have contacted the AQA to get my results ive moved house alot and seem to have lost the original certificates.....:wide-eyed so depending on what comes back i may have to retake my GCSE but when i did them back in 1985 they were CSE's it's so complicated... as i understand it if you are to go on and gain EYPS then you need grade C or above in both math's and english.

I kind of think im slightly crazy, ill be 40 this years have two boys aged 14 & 10, going back to school scares my slightly, but i did my level 3 course via distance learning and found it fitted in well with my home life and worked through the 6 weeks hols to get a ahead so kinda hoping this will work the same way.

If you do decide to go ahead with the OU we could bounce idea's questions etc...

Thanks for all your advice, am a bit scared lol but looking forward to it as well it will be hard I don’t doubt that for a minute but hopefully with some help from people like yourself I will do ok would love to stay in touch with you so we can help each other. I am a mum of 4 children 19, 17, 8, 3, a childminder and work in a playgroup so it will be a challenge.:wide-eyed

well the delivery man came yesterday and brought a parcel from OU its all my courese materials for the E100 part of the degree:wide-eyed

the offical start date is 3rd of Oct , and the first assignment needs to be in by 16th Nov... 2000 words.. oh boy what have i done..I'm going to have look at them over the weekend and try to get into my head what i need to do...

Have you got any materials through yet?
