remberance day ideas

hi found lovely Hands Poppy Wreath

Children can trace and cut out their hands on green construction paper (4 times). The hands are joined and glued together. Add the large poppy found in the template above.

ps have you any ideas how to introduce this activity day with preschool children . much appreciated

Hiya, for the children you could possibly approach it by linking the poppy wreath activity to the title Poppy Day, rather than rememberance, Armistice day or Veteran day & explain how it's a, or the day we remember the brave men and women who lived and died during world war one.

To introduce the concept of time and how WW1 may of affected famillies you could build a family tree - Child - parent - grandparent - great grandparent - great great grandparent ie, the child's mum's mum's mum's mum and dad's dad's dad's dad.

World war one: 1914 - 1918 ending on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour/am - 92 years ago

Significance of Corn poppies:
A flower that grows readily in places where the earth has seen fresh disturbance - where burial and loss is involved poppies grow to mark the area and help give us a focus or place for celebrating achievements and for grieving - missing those we love.

To explain this to the children you could say that the poppies grow in fields where soldiers were injured and have lost their lives - died. & how the Poppy flower helps us to remember what happened during the war.

Thank you all for the great replies. We are going to make poppy pictures with the heart shapes and also some stuffed poppies to hang for display.

I'm also hoping to get some extra poppy pictures to make a wall display and print off some photos of soldiers.

I'm going to deliver the idea of Rememberance Day by relating it to Superheros. It is important to ensure that we remember to tell children that Superheros aren't just Spiderman, the PowerPuff Girls or Ben 10, but they are Police and Firemen and of course Soldiers who protect us.

Thanks or all your help
