I have a letter of confirmation from Macclesfield (Elizabeth Fountaine) telling me I don't need to register as a food hygiene business and my surestart person says it's not happened for childminders in our area yet..... trying to get on a food hygiene course in the meantime cos if ofsted are expecting to see a certificate I'll be in trouble!

This is all very interesting. The legislation came in a while ago now and is pretty straightforward as far as registration is concerned - if you sell or give food to others, as part of a business or voluntary enterprise, then you have to be registered with the local authority as doing so. There was no roll out across the UK, the law applied to all parts of the country on the same day. Surestart Advisers, Local Authority Education Dept employees etc telling anyone "it doesn't apply here yet", "it doesn't apply to childminders" are, I believe, simply riding rough shod through the regulations and behaving, as so often is the case, as laws unto themselves.

This thread is a year old so in all fairness cascading of information was probably still in progress.

I've not heard anymore about the registration process. Has anyone rung to put their name down ?

I've just reg with the food hygiene in Jan 2008, this is when I got my letter saying I had to! Took long enough, up until now childminders did not have to reg with them
