It is supposed to available at all times, so that the children can help themselves. As a childminder, I ensure that the babies beakers are kept fresh and ready for them to take when they feel like it (for those able to help themselves).

For the slightly older children I leave out a jug (not too full as they haven't the strength to lift and pour) and they can help themselves to some water. My jug is lidded so that if it should be knocked over, a quick recovery would ensure not too much spillage.

I am hoping soon to have a water dispenser in the fridge (American Style) so that children can help themselves to this! I think it will encourage them to drink more water, rather than opt for juice!

In the school class room , there is a tap for drinking water and the children help themselves. In the playground there are water fountains for during play time

In the Pre School my children used to attend, they had a corner where they kept plastic cups and a jug of water also.
