Hi, a warm welcome to the site. I can confirm there isn't yet a handbook available that specifically supports this course. Which means you'll be reliant on self-initiated research, the materials given by your course provider and the professional support offered by your workplace xx

Unit 7 Support group living in residential childcare unit details on OCR

From the National Occupation Standard -SCDHSC0323 Contribute to child care practice in group living theories include

The nature and impact of factors that may affect the health, wellbeing and development of children and young people you care for or support
Theories underpinning our understanding of child development and factors that affect it
Theories about attachment and its impact on children and young people

In practice these mean understanding;
Theories relevant to the children and young people with whom you work about loss and change - bereavement and transition
Theories relevant to the children and young people with whom you work about the effects of stress and distress

A to Z of residential childcare on NCB.org
is a list of website links

As outcomes 2, 3, 4 and 5 of this unit will be assessed in your place of work can you contact your tutor and ask when they'll be covering the teaching of the theories?

Best wishes xx

Hi, a warm welcome to the site. Your setting's policies and procedures are underpinned/built on law/legislation, regulation and practice requirements.

In a residential setting you are already in an environment set up to support and assist vulnerable children and young people. By following procedures you are afforded the protection of the law. Act outside of those procedures ie. do things your way when requirements stipulate what ought to happen, might mean you are committing an offense and placing yourself at risk of allegation and complaint.

Procedures protect children by explicitly detailing what is expected of staff members in particular situations. If possible can you ask for copies of the home's policies & procedures?

If it helps the level 3 unit CYP 3.3 page 110 has good reading for safeguarding and page 122 shows how to protect yourself, page 124 explains what to do if a child alleges harm or abuse, NB some information on legislation in this book is out of date - handbook on amazon.co.uk

Hi
You are right there are no specific text books for this diploma. Try looking in level 3 teaching assistant text books, that's where I found my answers to learning potential

Hi all, I've recently joined this fantastic site as I too have been put forward to do the new residential course!! What a nightmare to find any research material. I'm only on my 2nd unit of the course and feel like pulling my hair out already. It was so refreshing to read other people are to having the same difficulty with this course. If anyone has come across any new books that they think are relevant please let me know. I hope one day to be able to feel that I can help someone out there with my little knowledge of boys/men in a specialised care environment. Thanks lots. Ps I'm half way through Unit 2 at the moment

I am currently on this module and am struggling badly with being able to find info on this part, I have now spent all afternoon trawling through theories and still not having the answer to it. It is making me feel completely stupid and frustrated.
