safe - locks on external doors which are high up, harmful substances locked away in cupboards out of reach from children, walk ways and areas around activities free from clutter.

effective room layout - bright colours, bold fonts, posters, displays, activities spaced out so enough room to participate, resources at the correct height for children to access.

planning - appropriate activities set up in accordance to the childrens age and level of ability.

i would disagree with Shabz, good settings have been moving away from bright colours they over stimulate and confuse the senses. the best places i have been into recently have been vary muted natural colours with few displays and those they have at child height for constant revision by the children. research enabling environments and steer clear of primary colours and tat! very few tables, activities spaced on the floor and nice soft floor beds baskets for when a child wants to sleep. self chosen naps of course.
there should only be one focus activity a day the rest should be free play and free choice.
