Hi

This is what i wrote for this question.

It is important for any child in your care to be looked after in a secure, friendly manner, all children should be protected against harm whether it is accidental or whether they are at risk from others (staff or other children). Parents need to trust the people that are looking after their children. We have policies and procedures to adhere to. There are three main policies regarding this and they are Child protection (keeping children safe from others or parents/carers), Risk assessments (to minimise the risk) and health and safety (washing their hands after toileting and before snack). All staff are CRB checked, first aid trained, attend child protection courses etc.
Children do not have the knowledge or know how to protect themselves so we have a duty to help them achieve this.

Here are some policies with an example of risks:

Safeguarding children and child protection – If you think a child is being abused or neglected or in any harm. It is our duty to protect them from any harm or abuse, so that the child does not suffer. We would follow the policy and procedure if abuse is suspected.

Maintaining children’s safety and security on premises – This policy is put into place because there are risks involved in looking after children. Here are a couple of examples of risks involved, a child walking out of the setting, a child being taken by persons unknown to them. This policy and procedure is put into place to minimise these risks e.g. CRB checks for staff, children are supervised at all times, risk assessments are put into place (safety gate put up correctly), A visitors book and registers (whilst children enter building and when they leave).
Food hygiene – This policy is put into place to protect children from things like food poisoning or cross infection.
Risk assessment – These are put into place to protect staff, children and visitors. Here are a few examples of risk assessments, climbing frame, water play, Toys are age/stage appropriate, Slips, trips and falls, Coshh, Electrical equipment, equipment in good working order etc.
There are five main steps to follow when completing a risk assessment and these are;
• The potential risk?
• Who is at risk?
• Existing control measures.
• Risk rating.
• Who is responsible?
There are a lot of other policies and procedures that are put into place to protect the children from harm whether it is a minor or major incident.

and this is what i wrote for the second question.

It is important to safeguard children and young people because they are more likely to suffer abuse or neglect, in the hands of people that are suppose to care for them because they are unable to do this for themselves and are very vulnerable. A child/young person does not have the knowledge or the know how to protect themselves so we have a duty to help them achieve this.
In the year 2000 the NSPCC published reports showing a steady increase of children being abused or neglected. This could be due to a better awareness of abuse or neglect and it is important for us to continue to safeguard and protect children and young people.

Hope it helps

Lynne
