Physical exercise is of course useful in building physical skills and strengthening muscle tone. It encourages fine and gross motor skills, hand-eye coordination and balance. It presents a good opportunity to talk to the children about a healthy lifestyle and the importance of keeping fit.
In order to maintain positive mental health it is important for children to be active. Physical exercise does not only build physical strength and skill, it also helps to raise self-esteem and establishes a sense of achievement and healthy competition in children. This can be a beneficial attitude to have as children grow older, making them strive to do their best in activities. Physical exercise pushes the children to the edge of their comfort zones, and encourages them to take (safe!) risks and try new experiences. It can encourage co-operation, turn taking and independence.
