I need to write down the code of conduct or failing that the expectations of my role (pre-school assistant).. Just needed a starting point really.. I've asked the leader at pre-school who wasn't sure whether we have a staff code of conduct, she said she would ask the manager, but my manager is never any help :-(

This is part policy & procedure and part contract at our setting.
In staff contracts many things are written into them such as a dress code - no 'revealing' low tops, low waisted jeans with thong underwear etc, confidentiality - in contract and policy, things such as treating children and parents equally and respectively whatever their culture, religion or their circumstances. Staff should also use appropriate language (no swearing) nor discriminate, etc.
The list is endless - put into contracts and policies so everyone understands and is aware of what is expected of them and why. Most of the above is common sense - but as we don't always think alike, and some people use language that is not appropriate to others i.e. I noticed that someone placed a posting on this forum about the phrase 'OMG' not thinking it may be offensive to others or even inappropriate for children to hear.
Most staff do not want to offend, but if someone has worked somewhere where there has been no dress code and swearing was allowed or swearing is the 'norm' at home they may not think, and that's why everything is told to applicants at interviews, put into contracts, policies and a probation period given.
