its asking how knowing about child development will help you identifi the childs individual and extra needs for example knowing at 3 years a child should be talking a fair amount, if you have a 3 year old not talking you then know the child needs support in this area of development, then all you have to do is say where and when you would discuss a concern with parents or other agencies-would you want to get a speech specialist to asses this child? or from your child development knowlege do you know that there is a dalay in this childs language development because the child is learning a number of languages (maybe dad speaks one language and mum another) and you know this through speaking to the childs parents.
like wise if you have a 2 year old doing a 100 piece jigsaw with ease (like my nephew did) then you may need to give extra support and stimulation as the child would be above the cognitive development norm for a child that age. your concern to parents here would be telling them they need to give him jigsaws that arnt for an average 2 year old to allow the childs skills to develop.
and knowing about child development also makes it easier to detect when a child is being abused, for example a sexually abused child would possibly show unusual behaviour by knowing what kind of behaviour an average child would show allows you to recognise what this child is doing differently, and knowing about child services allows you to get additional help to protect and support the child.
just think of all the things you know about child development that helps you detect when somethings amatter or when you need to give extra support to the child, then think about when you would talk to parents and or other proffecionals, another example is if you have a screaming baby you know youve met all their basic needs and you have tried holding, giving attention and playing with them, then you know to check their temp, get help by mum-do they have a comforter? or possibly go to a doctor.
Hope this helps
