Express individual preferences : when a child tells you what they prefer eg playing outdoors or indoors, the taste of an apple or an orange, the colour red or the colour blue, playing alone or playing in a group, etc etc etc
Become aware of others : as young children are still quite self absorbed and think the world revolves around them (!), they need to start to become aware of the other people around them eg both adults and other children. They need to realise that other people have different opinions and preferences to them. Also that other people have different beliefs due to their religious or cultural background and may make different choices to them. Also, as part of their social and emotional development, children need to become aware that other people have feelings and that they need to be mindful of other people's feelings.
