You should have policies and procedures for giving medication - and a medication record book when you do - which will help you through the procedure and then anything else your setting has implemented such as only administering medicines and the quantity as stated in the original packaging. Just because a parent may decide to 'double dose' their child at home, does not give us the liberty to do.

It is best we follow the correct procedures for safety reasons. It is normal procedure to get the parent to countersign the consent form for anything you have given - in addition of their permission in the first place. In our setting a practitoner will always witnesses another administering medicine, to ensure that the correct dosage is given.

You may have children (now or in the future) at your setting that are asthmatic or insulin dependant (and many other reasons) and need regular medication or you may have a child that needs to complete a course of medication which you are required to administer during the session; so you will need to know what to do.

As well as reading up on your policies and procedures, ask you manager to go through it with you, and study the record books etc, so you are familar with the process.

It will be up to your manager, whom she wishes to give the responsibility of administering medicines, or she may wish /feel confident that everyone is capable.
