Hi,

All children are different and will learn at different rates, some children will enter early years with good speech and language development where as another may struggle, it could be down to an underlying problem which is being investigated or it may mean the practitioner speaking with parents to give them some advice on taking their child to see their GP. Or it could be that the child is developing at a different rate. It’s important to provide support and structured activities to build up their speech and language skills. Some children may find it difficult to settle in and you need to be supportive and patient. For a child who is struggling with speech and language get down to their level, eye contact and simplify your sentences using the right tone and pitch, adapt your own language offer praise and always listen and get as much information from parents as you can. Make sure the child can clearly see you face and body and speak slower or point to objects while saying the word. Some children will be above average on their speech and language for example we had a child in nursery who could hold very complex conversations and was able to read books which are aimed at children older than him so he was encouraged to work at the level he felt comfortable at which was also challenging. When planning activities adapt them to suit the needs of the individual child.

hope it helps x
