Hi, CYP 3.4 4.1 - Explain the policies and procedures of the setting or service in response to accidents, incidents, emergencies and illness.

Ask your setting for a copy of policies and procedures that involve: fire, first aid, accidents, illness, lost or missing children, intruders, incidents - challenging behaviour/gas/evacuation and what the ways & books are for reporting these.

This is criteria that your tutor or assessor may well arrange to discuss with you and observe when they visit. It involves you knowing what to do in each of those situations by following the guidelines for practice that are written inside you setting's policies & procedures ie. how do you respond if there's an accident, there's an incident, there's an emergency, there is illness - how do you recognise each of those situations and what do you do / how is it managed, who do you contact, do you wear protective clothing, do you risk assess/check who and what is in danger, do you evacuate, do you record events in writing/a book/form, are you part of any later discussions that examines what happened to see if anything could of prevented or minimised it.

Accidents could be: vehicles, falls, burns, heat, falling objects, sharp objects.
Emergencies could be: fire, drowning, missing children/young people
Illness could be: sudden onset illness, exacerbation or deteriation of a person's illness or condition
Incidents could be: an intruder, an aggressive outburst, evacuated building due to a gas

First aid:
who is the designated first aider?
-*- they will have a responsibility to contact emergency services
-*- regularly check a first aid kit and ensure everyone knows they are individually responsible to let the first aider know when an item has been used.
-*- They will know about training opportunities and if asked be able to check the first aid training status of other employees.
First aid kit:
-*- do you know where it is?
-*- are you familiar with what it contains
-*- do you know how to use items appropriately

Fire policy:
Find out about the fire drills in your setting, how often they happen, how they are recorded. Where the fire exits are, what the evacuation routes are, where the gathering point is, who has responsibility to take the register that checks names ensuring everyone is outside, present and safe, who is leads at the front, who leads at the back and other designated roles for an effective safe evacuation.

Sickness policy:
This is a document that will be concerned with all individuals in the setting their well-being and safety - of the individual feeling unwell and all those that they are in contact with, making those individuals vulnerable to infection.
-*- Read the policy to see what it says about children who are unwell and if there is a recommendation for the time it might take until children are well enough to return to the setting - spotty book
-*- Does it mention children who have been kept at home due to illness and may need to be verified by a GP as being fit for return.
-*- Does the policy mention managing children's prescribed medicines
-*- Parents and carers may need to make arrangements for emergency care if their child becomes ill during the day. Where are contact numbers kept to ensure children have a safe place to go if they fall ill.
