Explain the legal status and principles of the relevant early years framework/s, and how national and local guidance materials are used in settings.

National
Practitioners have a national set of standards which apply to all childcare settings. This is to make sure that as a nation we provide a high quality childcare service to all families. It ensures consistency. throughout the early years sector. As childcare providers we are measured, monitored and inspected against these standards by our governing body Ofsted

Local

******
As you can see I have put something down for national - is it ok - what the heck can I put down for local
******

I have also added (which has been marked ok - it was just the above that needed work apparently)

The early year’s framework (EYFS) was introduced in England in 2008, originally set up for to help young children achieve 5 outcomes

Staying safe
Being healthy
Making a positive contribution
Achieving and wellbeing
Enjoy and achieving.

It is for babies and children from birth to the age of 5. The framework was updated in Sept 2012 and became known as the revised EYFS. The legal status and principles are set out in the framework and must be followed by all early years providers. It deals with welfare requirements and learning/development requirements. It has been revised again and the most recent form came into being in Sept 2014.

The governing body is Ofsted. There is an Early Years Register aka EYR which deals with looking after children aged from birth to 31 Aug after their 5th birthday.
General Childcare Register aka GCR - this is for children aged from 5 to their 8th birthday. Anyone wanting to look after children of any age must be on both registers.

EYFS

The EYFS statutory framework contains the rules, regulations and guidance surrounding the welfare of children, to ensure a child has the correct foundation for a good start in life. It is the legal responsibility of all early years providers to follow this. The framework applies to all children being cared for outside of their home:-
Childminders
Preschools
Nurseries
Schools etc

PRIME

The EYFS has 3 prime areas of learning - these are the developmental milestones a child between 0-5 should be reaching. They are:

• Personal, social and emotional development
• Physical development
Communication and language

SPECIFIC

There are then 4 specific areas of learning. These apply once the child has achieved the prime areas. They are:

• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design

CHARACTERISTIC OF EFFECTIVE LEARNING

A process of learning not the outcome!
Children learn in different ways and recognising these ways can help them to go on to learn more. 3 characteristics identified by the EYFS are:

Playing and exploring - investigating, discovering, having a go
• Active learning - concentrating, persevering, enjoying achieving
Creating and critical thinking - coming up with new ideas and linking things together, developing new ways of doing things, new ways of discovering how things work

There are 4 over arching principles of the EYFS that should shape practice - these are:

unique child
positive relationships
enabling environments and
recognition that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.

The 7 areas of learning, the 4 principles and the 3 characteristics of learning combined help guide the planning and development of the child

By the end of the reception year at school, all children are expected to have achieved all of the aims set out within the EYFS framework.
