Some children may suffer from a condition that affects their health or have a cultural background that excludes them from certain activities part of your role will be to be aware of the issues that can have a positive or negative influence on children’s lives. You should ensure that this understanding is at the centre of your work & then you will be following the child.
five ECM outcomes:
• Be healthy
• Stay safe
• Enjoy & achieve
• Make a positive contribution
• Achieve economic wellbeing
Children’s lives can vary & that families & children may need support at certain times in their lives.
Social Economic & Cultural Factors Possible impact on lives of children.

Personal choice-Families may make the choice to live in a way that varies from the norm e.g. communal living, nomadic families or same gender parents. This may affect the way other families & society relate to such children; a child’s schooling might be affected if they are part of a travelling community.
Poverty-A family living on a low income might not be able to provide for their children as hoped. Accommodation may be poor which can have an effect on the mental & physical health of children & their parents.
Housing & Community-Poor quality or cramped housing conditions can negatively affect a child’s development. Living in a community where children have challenging or anti-social behaviour can isolate families, making them reluctant to let their children play in the community. Rural communities can isolate families & make it difficult to access education or health facilities because of limited transport.
Educational Environment-There is many different educational environments. All educational settings are regulated. A setting that does not meet statutory requirements may affect child’s development & potential. Offending or anti-social behaviour Such behaviour by parents of a child may result in a child being taken in to care.

Involving children can make a positive contribute to their environment
• Develop children’s communication skills
• Support children’s right
• Ensure legal responsibilities are upheld
• Ensure choices are truly democratic
• Promote children’s protection by ensuring their concerns are listened to
• Make the CYP feel valued and respected by involving them in decision making
