2.4 maybe start with:

Name the five outcomes of ECM

Explain why it is important to design services/support around the individual needs of child/young person –
• Support child’s learning and development
• Support child’s needs/disabilities
• To be inclusive
• Comply with current laws and legislation

Why is it important that children/young people take part in making decisions that will affect heir own lives –
• Value the child’s thoughts, views and opinions
• To give the child sense of belonging and control on their life and well being
• Learn the process of decision making
• Learn what the consequences of decisions are and how to deal with their decisions

Ways of supporting children/young people to make personal choices and experiences according to age, needs and abilities –
• Allow them to express thoughts, views and opinions and listen to them
• Offer constructive and fair advice
• Complete activities that will allow them to make decisions and make choices
• Be there to support throughout process of decisions making and when things may go wrong

and maybe for:

CYP 3.7 - 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4

Explain what the potential impact will be to children/young people’s lives of disability, special requirements (additional needs) and attitudes to make positive outcomes and within their lives -
• Physical impairments and chronic medical conditions may compromise healthy development and disrupt their educational experiences.
• Adult focus on what’s wrong with child and what they can’t do rather than what they can do and already achieving
• Poor self-esteem
• Hamper children’s all round development
• Financial difficulties
• Restricted opportunities
• Destabilized families and relationships
• Causes stress and depression

Explain why it is important to positive attitudes towards disabilities and special requirements –
• helps the person feel valued
• prevents isolation
• ensures inclusive and anti-discriminatory practice
• follows and complies with procedures and legislation
• teaches others to adopt positive attitudes
• builds positive relationships
• fosters good relationships within communities and society
• builds up respect for differences

Explain the definitions:
• Social model of disability – recognises that discrimination against disabled people is created by society not by the person’s impairments
• Medical model – this treats the person as a sick patient and tends to focus on how we can make this person normal
• The impact of each on practice:
• To ensure practice is accessible i.e. environment and trained staff

Explain what support is available for children with disabilities and /or specific requirements:
• Senco,
• outside agencies,
• equipment,
• adapting environment and activities,
• trained staff for medical needs.
