Alert Scottish Red Squirrel Survey: call to action.

Scottish Red Squirrel Survey

Ongoing survey & statistical data collection is being carried out across Scotland that is asking for volunteer help in noticing & reporting sightings.

DundeeRedSquirrel.co.uk has a very user friendly way of reporting information & ScottishSquirrelSurvey.co.uk has much relevant information on its site.

Download page from DundeeRedSquirrel

Squirrel pox seems to be the largest threat to the Reds - a viral disease that kills Red quirrels 15 days from infection. Greys appear to have the necessary antibodies to protect themselves from the disease.

Immunisation, spread & implications of Squirrel Pox is still very much being investigated/developed and this Fact sheet contains some very useful informative PLEASE note there is an image in the PDF of a squirrel that may of contracted pox - for identification purposes the image can be used as a guide - Squirrel Pox fact sheet

The PDF 'Project information' details steps currently in place to help map and identify the need of the Squirrels & whilst culling is a method used to control greys at the moment hopefully a new way of monitoring environment/breeding and our internevtions can help in allowing for a more balanced existance.
