Hi, these links might help:

On page 13 of the Managing attendance on ACAS http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1183 , it titles this requirement as

Notification of absence

The employee should speak to their manager or deputy as soon as possible by a set time – perhaps within an hour of their normal start time.
They should also:
  • give a clear indication of the nature of the illness and
  • a likely return date
  • The manager should promise to keep in regular contact.
and on this article page as 'authorised absence and lateness' http://www.acas.org.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1566

On gov.uk https://www.gov.uk/taking-sick-leave

From the employees perspective: https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/wo...u-are-off-sick

Legal advice on HSE: http://www.hse.gov.uk/sicknessabsence/legalguidance.htm

Hth best wishes xx
