4.3 explain how babies express their emotions, preferences and needs and demonstrate care in own practice

Babies express themselves through a range of sound movements; if they are angry they may pull a face or groan. If they are hungry, need changing or is upset they cry. If they are happy they will smile, or make squeaky sounds. Babies show their preferences by pulling faces, noises or by nodding their head. Because they can’t talk we should offer them comfort, pick them up, and play with them.

4.4 explain why it is important to manage transitions for babies and young children

It is extremely important to manage transitions in babies and young children. These transitions are building blocks for what the child will be able to do and understand in their future lives. If transitions are well supported, children can learn to manage change in a positive way, which is a very important skill for life. Effective transitions can provide opportunities to help children develop self-worth, confidence and the capacity to be resilient in the process of dealing with change.
