Hi page 16+ of this level 3 handbook looks at how practitioners are expected to help, or be involved with planning healthy meals for children, preparing food, record what children eat and drink and to work with parents, sharing information with each other.

The starting pont for meeting children's individual dietary needs is to work with parents. As well as being good praactice, this is also alegal requirement of the EYFS (for practioners working in settings in England). Finding out about children's individaual dietary needs and preferences is usually the role of the key person. This is because the key person has responsibility for working closely with the child and their parents. When children first come into the early years setting, the key person will record any dietary needs. Over time, this information will be updated.

The benefits of working in partnership with carers/parents.

It is important for everyone who works with children to develop a strong partnership with the child's parents. When it comes to the provision of food and drink, this is particularly important. By finding out about children's individual needs, we show parents that we care about their children and respect their wishes. For children with significant medical conditions or allergies, such as diabetes or a nut allergy, by working closely with parents we can reassure them that their child will be safe. This in turn will allow the child to benefit from the play and educational opportunities on offer. A good relationship with parents also enables information to be shared with the setting - for example, if the child has not eaten breakfast or is fussy about certain foods.

Another benefit of having a good relationship with parents, is that they are more likely to talk to us about any difficulties that they are having around meal times. While early years professionals are not trained in nutritiona and so cannot provide advice, they can signpost parents to other services or professionals who may be able to help.
