Thank you Puddles

Puddles for jumping in .. stepping over and driving through

Use naturally and ownmade puddles to explore splashing, ripples, depth, senses / feeling and water movements.

Activities with puddles ...
  • Drop a small pebble into the middle and watch the rippled circles radiate outwards.
  • Drop Leaves onto the surface and see if they float or sink.
  • Watch for any small insects that land on the top ... do they float or sink.
  • Use straws to blow ripples across the surface or watch have wind can speed things from one side of the puddle to the other.
  • Draw around the outside edge of a puddle and then as it dries up ask the children if they know why it has/is disappearing ~ Discuss the concept of evaporation.
Discussion
  • Point out to the children how the water level always returns to the same flat level.
  • Do they know why a puddle has formed in that particular spot?
  • Can they see other dips in the area where a puddle is or may form?
  • What sort of footwear can be worn to jump and wade in puddles?
  • What happens if a car drives through a deep puddle?
Don't let it being summer put you off making your own puddles... remember where they normally appear and fill up with a bucket of water!

Wellies, tyres, hoops and trikes all add to the fun of splashing through puddles ... enjoy
